Not often do we hear the advice “get dumb,” most especially in business where you have to continually step up. However, you have to face the fact that you can’t know everything about your industry the way you thought you did. Ken talks about the practice of going SEM Rush to analyze your top five competitors. Realize how much data you still need to know amidst the continuous change that is happening.
Listen to the podcast here:
The title of this is Get Dumb, Get Stupid. Here’s what you do. You take your top five competitors and you put them in SEM Rush, Search Engine Marketing Rush, SEMRush.com. Once you put your five competitive companies’ domain names in there, you go down about three to four inches and you look at the top five keywords that their websites are ranking on, the top five keywords your competitors are ranking on and you write them down exactly how they’re displayed in SEM Rush. You think you know your industry until you don’t. One by one, you add those phrases into Google Alerts, one of Google’s free tools, one of the greatest tools on the planet and you set that alert to everything as it happens. Google is going to take these 25 phrases that your competitors are dominating and they’re going to basically put them into a system that says, anybody worldwide, any newspaper, any magazine, anything that publishes a piece of content with any of these 25 phrases in it or very similar to it, they’re going to email you that piece of content.
You think you know your industry, you know you know it, but you think you really know it. We never really know our space. It’s changing at the speed of thought. I just told the conference at Digital Footprint that for the last six years, one out of every four phrases put into Google search bar is for the first time. They’ve never had it before. The world is asking one-fourth of all the questions for the first time. The world is asking different questions every day. I promise you this, if you think you know your industry, you don’t know your industry. Your industry is changing like sand underneath your feet.We never really know our space. Click To Tweet
Put these 25 phrases into Google Alerts and watch the content come at you. For some of your industries that are so niche, you might want to go to ten phrases and do 50, so ten from each competitor. You’re going to realize you’re going to get one to two, three new pieces of content every day and you’re going to read what’s going on in your industry. You’re going to go, “There is so much I don’t know.” It’s episode two, you’ve got to go back sometime, but I have an episode called Rookie to Expert in Six Months. That’s what this is pretty much touching. If you want to know more about this, I do a deep dive on exactly how to do that. Get dumb, pretend you don’t know jack, humble yourself, go into Google Alerts and start to study and master your industry with cutting-edge information. I hope this helps. Take care.
