The Magic Of Thinking Pt. 1
We’re centered around growing businesses and techniques that work now, not necessarily 30 years ago, 100 years ago or in 30 years, but techniques that work today. I’m going to talk a little bit about some principles that are definitely evergreen. They’re going to work today, they’re going to work tomorrow, and they definitely worked hundreds of years ago.

We’re proud of it. It is awesome. We’re switching the model. We sell out every time. We do have a lot of angry people that can’t get in, so we did something interesting. We got above our skis and secured a ballroom three times larger than we’ve ever needed.
We’re going to begin an escalator where the prices are what they are now, but as the event gets closer, it’s going to get more expensive. I’m in the middle of preparing a monthly webinar called The Magic of Thinking Big. In doing the homework, I figured out I could put a couple teasers of what I’m going to cover on this webinar. Here’s what we know, the magic of thinking big in the business world, in the professional sports world, in the high-end executive world, it’s not optional. If you’re not thinking big, you’re going to have issues, that’s for sure. I want to talk a little bit about what I gathered from reading Steve Jobs’ biography. It was told in that book that many people agreed that he had some form of reality distortion disorder. Meaning, before even the physical mechanics of the ability to build the iPod case out of aluminum the way he saw it in his brain, he willed it to happen. He literally kept talking about it until a couple years later, the equipment and the science allowed it to be so.
Kerri and I spent a couple of hours in Ohio with Jeff Hoffman. Jeff often speaks at our Digital Footprint. He’s a Co-Founder of the $60 plus-billion Priceline.com and Jeff mentors Kerri and I on a couple of different points. We were talking about his charity called Unreasonable. We asked him, “Why is this called Unreasonable?” He said, “It goes back to a very famous quote that either man reacts to the world around him or men creates the world around him and it is the crazies, the insane that stand firm and keep speaking things into existence even before the world is ready for them.” I go, “That is awesome.” It fits right into my little talk here about the magic of thinking big. There are a couple components to this, and the first part of the magic of thinking big is the physical ability to think.
Thinking is interesting. You have to have energy to think. You have to make time to think. You have to have the energy to think. How many of you reading this run your business using a concept called reactal management? You have a plan for your day or week, but as soon as you open an email or turn the phone on, you are reacting for about six or seven hours of your fundamental eight-hour day. Reactal management and thinking big are oil and water. It’s not going to work.
The other thing is you have to make time. Let’s go back to reactal. If you’re living in a reactal management modality, which, I’m going to assume, 90% of people reading this are going to by default be a fighter, a navigator, when you’re waiting to respond to things, you are forced to navigate around them or fight back on them or pushed back in them. I learned from an incredible gentleman named Steve Begg. I did a 91-day stint at MCI Worldcom helping them with a sales office. He was like a VP of some Midwest division or something, but I’ll never forget he held a meeting and I was sitting in the meeting and he was talking at such great length of causal management for salespeople, management owners.

It was a captivating talk and I remember saying, “I am 50% reactal.” I made a decision that day to be much more causal. Step one in the magic of thinking big is to think small. Can you break up your week thinking small and dedicate 30 minutes in the next five working days? In your calendar, you blot it out and you write in the time slot, say 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM or 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM. You turn off Skype, Slack, email, phone, turn every digital apparatus off, get out pen and paper, and you think about big things.
What do you think about? You think about current roadblocks. You think about obstacles. What is currently in our way as a company blocking us? What problem in front of me can money solve? If you have a problem that money can solve, then you have no problems. Step one to the magic of thinking big is to think small. Carve out a 30-minute block. I personally think it should be done on a Sunday evening or a Monday 5:00 AM or a Friday, 4:00 PM, somewhere at the outskirts of a schedule.
Like John Maxwell says, “In the precursor of a schedule,” meaning in that quiet time when you could sit on your porch or sit in your bedroom, nobody’s watching. Nobody’s harassing you via digital apparatus of email or phone, when can you get out paper, plant the seed of a thought or an idea and do on it and chew on it literally for 30 plus minutes, that’s when the magic happens. Step one of the magic of thinking big is to think small. Block out a time for 30 minutes, and then jump right into step two. Step two is covered in episode 247.
