Author Equity 102

I’m going to do a few podcasts centered around some of the things we did and learned from a trip that my wife and I took to Cali, Colombia. We were invited to Colombia from Cesar Berrío. I was mentoring Cesaralong with 25 others. My wife and I were mentoring a group of people for Success Resources in Las Vegas. There was a gentleman there from Colombia. His name is César. I had just met César. We did not have much of a relationship. I coached him on a few points in an eight-person group session, I asked him a few questions and I got to know his business a little bit. He took me out in the hallway, I could tell he was setting up a very important question, and he asked me, “I’m thinking of doing an event in Cali, Colombia. It’s a city of 2 million people.”

There has never been any type of business growth and personal development conferences as they just came out of a revolution. They were run by guerillas after an eight-year run of a good president cleaning things up. The last two years, their president is connected to the guerilla. They’re stabilized, but it’s not a perfect country yet. There has not been much in the world of capitalism. Cesar took me in the hallway he said, “Do you think with the climate such as it is, should I hold an event?” I said, “Not only do I think you should. If you hold an event, it would be my pleasure if you wanted Kerri and I to come out there and speak on your stage.” He about fell backwards and he did not believe it.

He called his partner in Colombia and he’s like, “I don’t believe this guy, but he says they’ll come out and speak and he won’t charge us any money.” Needless to say, a few months later, here we are in Cali, Colombia talking to hundreds of people from a stage. There were so many people that showed up. Just the thought of having this event, they were in the news and they were all over the place. It was a tremendous event. The point I want to specifically talk about is something called author equity. I have a podcast episode called How Google Ranks and nothing’s changed in all these years. Number three is still Author Equity. On the presupposition that you understand the power of author equity, I’ve been spending about a year trying to get my wife, Kerri, to have a slightly higher author equity according to Google.

If you type in Kerri Courtright into Google, Kerri comes up almost three pages deep for her own name. She is all over the place. She’s an elected official. She’s shared stages with some of the biggest people in the world from New York to Dubai to Colombia. Some of that stuff wasn’t coming up. I wanted to make sure that for both myself and my wife, we immediately came up in Google for speaking in Colombia. We had two talks, which we had two PowerPoint presentations. In each presentation, I titled them different. The first talk, even though we both spoke, I titled it Ken Courtright, Cali, Colombia PowerPoint presentation. The second one was Kerri Courtright, Cali, Colombia. I went into SlideShare.net and I uploaded those presentations. I have previously made a profile. You create a profile and you upload all presentation slide that you have if you give a talk or teach anything. Even if you make a memo inside your company that you could share publicly, I recommend you put that memo in the SlideShare.

Author Equity: Every time you do something of significance or importance, you’ve got to find a way to embed that in a public platform.

Why? It’s one of the ten largest websites in the world. It’s all user-generated content. From a worldwide stage, many newspapers and magazines go into SlideShare on an automatic API and they pull out anything published by someone famous. One of the ways you can become famous with author equity is through SlideShare. I uploaded the two slides and I was able to stand from the stage and tell everybody, “Don’t worry about taking pictures of these slides. You don’t have to ask Cesar for these slides. All you have to do is Google Kerri Courtright, Cali, Colombia, and the slides will come up. Google Ken Courtright, Cali, Colombia, and the slides will come up.” What happened? Sure enough, I checked it in Google and I typed in Kerri Courtright, Cali Colombia. Not only does the slides come up, but a Malaysian newspaper already grabbed my wife’s slides and made a press release with it, trying to get a jump on everybody else.

To get author equity is to show Google everything about you. Click To Tweet

Author equity is critical and the way to get author equity is to show Google that you speak, you write books, you podcast, and you do Facebook Lives. You have to show Google every time you do something of significance, you’ve got to find a way in a public platform to embed that in there. Sign your signature, which is just your name, and you’ve proven who you are. One of the greatest tools and techniques I’ve used to build author equity for many people is SlideShare.net.

We were on day two when somebody came up to me in broken English and he said, “I just googled your wife. I knew, Ken, that you were somebody of importance, but I never knew your wife Kerri was so important.” I said, “What a difference in me taking a year and helping Kerri build her author equity.” Now, when people google my wife, she looks important because she is important. If you’re a business owner or salesperson, you’re important. If you manage a company and want to keep climbing the ladder, let alone ever leave that company to go to get another job, you are important. You need to show the world you are important and the main way to do that is by building your author equity.
