Growth Needs Three Fillers And Three Motivators

Here’s a topic I used to talk about a lot in the mid-‘90s and for some reason, I had failed to do so with our team and the others we consult. This is important because we live in a world that is so fast-paced, energy-sucking and so demotivating. News, if it doesn’t bleed, it doesn’t lead. Talk about the word entropy. This show is for everybody, all leaders, all managers, all coaches, all moms and dads. Do you know your three fillers and your three motivators? As we go throughout our day, in our week, in our month, in our year, we are constantly getting sucked of energy. We are getting sucked dry of fuel and motivation. I’m going to cover my three and three. I highly suggest you sit down with your co-managers, your spouse and other leaders in your company, all employees working with you, for you, all JVs and ask them to come up with their three and three. The three things that fill my tank emotionally above all, especially when I’m drained and down.

Number one is travel and adventure. I got to see something new. I got to visit a place I’ve never been to. I got to explore. Number two is entertainment. Nothing pumps me up more than going and hearing some live concert, a live symphony or the opera, anything where I’m around incredible talent and elite people. I love when their expertise in their gift pours into me. The third and the one I rely on the most is reading and pure quiet. Quite often with the noise of the world, I’ve got to escape for periods of time. Let the ATP rebuild in my brain and go at it again. It’s travel and adventure, entertainment and reading and quiet. I’m a choleric-sanguine. There are many who are called melancholic-phlegmatic. People have different personalities. People get filled and motivated totally differently. Very few people would say that my three and three would fill and motivate them, some but not all.

The other thing that I rely on and I slant towards is I love getting around incredible success stories, whether reading them or watching documentaries. I love reading billionaire biographies and when you hear the crap they went through to get there. I love hanging with elite people in person, whether it’s getting the ability to shake Buzz Aldrin’s hand or literally pressing the flesh with global leaders. My wife got invited to the White House. I was her plus one. It was amazing. I love that. The other three, especially the biggest thing that motivates the snot out of me is the failure. As a company, we fail so much every day all the time. We learn, we get angry, excited and we grow. Go ask yourself, what three things fill you up and what three things motivate the snot out of you? Once you know yours, go bring this to your teams. I hope this helps. Take care.
