Ken relates a story of a father taking his kids to the train and they are completely crazy. It’s morning rush hour and the kids are not cooperating. Finally a woman who has had enough walks up and says “hey I get it I have kids so I appreciate it but can you please control you kids” and they man says “you’re right I am so sorry but I haven’t broken the news the kids but their mom passed away last night and I don’t know how to tell them. I’m afraid if I go and touch them I’m going to break down” People around the train heard the sentence. Can you imagine the paradigm shift that on that train in that moment? It changed their vision of the situation.
Almost All Walk Backward Through Life
It is my goal on this podcast to related to you that we are all walking backwards, we walk through life almost blind. I like to prove it with a story. Several years ago I received a phone call where they asked me if I’d like to speak in between Brain Tracy and Danny Sullivan. I of course said YES! I was honored to be apart of the event.
Danny Sullivan goes on stage and say 10x is infinitely easier than 2x. Most people in the audience knew what he was speaking about. He was saying that growing a business 10 fold is much easier than growing it 2 fold.
Pretend that everyone in the room has a 14 year old daughter and we are all strong enough to dangle her over the edge of a 30 story building. If I gave you 30 send to come up with 3 things that you know would grow your business in the next sixty days before I drop her, do you think you could do it?
Now lets up the ante pretend you have a twin daughter and I could swing the other out over the edge and I gave you 60 second to come up with 3 ideas to grow your business 10x over the next year and they couldn’t be the same answers you gave the first time. Regardless of money or time.
“Zip your pants in the front!” write them down.
Here is the kicker and this almost 100% correct. Of the first 3 things you wrote down 2 of you’ve done before you know they’ll work. If you’ve them before and you know they will work you’re facing the past you’re turning around and looking back. However here is the magic, when asked you to write down 3 things to grow your business 10x the odds are nearly 100% that you have never tried 2 of the 3 things. So you in a sense you had to turn around and face the front, into the future, into the complete unknown and write three things you’ve never tried before.
Play The Mind Growth Game
The point of the episode is to prove the law of hyper growth and it says you must lead you must turn forward. We are not wired to face forward we’re wired to turn back, to go somewhere safe. To go from the known to the unknown we have to recondition ourselves, There is a game you can play called the Mind Game or Mind Growth Game and it has two steps.
Say this, If someone gave you or dumped on you 1.5 million dollar and you had two weeks to deploy those funds to the field for marketing, advertising, hiring whatever. What three ways would you spend it in equal amounts. WRITE THEM DOWN. This is another exercise to face forward, to do what you’ve never done before.
Ask yourself hat three things did I choose. Now you have to face reality you don’t have a 1.5 million. But now you have a plan. Take those things you picked and see what you can do with the money you do have even if it’s 50 dollars. What is the deepest root of the exercise? It’s to grow business, how do you grow business? You must grow the numbers. If you try a slimmed down version of the things you would do at high level of capital you are collecting data.
Relax in the Numbers – Since 1974 for 31 years McDonalds could not screw up same store sales growth. They had the formula for 3 decades. They knew exactly how much to spend on advertising and they knew that if they spent more they wouldn’t get a return on their investment. They could relax in the numbers. Now it took them 15 years to get there but they found it.
Every business has a number. You can find your number and the best way I’ve found in the 23 years I’ve been growth consulting is to face forwards instead of back. Try things you’ve never done before and I guarantee at least one of the things will shock you with the results.
